This year, when the Kraft Celebration Tour visits Wallaceburg on August 20, TSN anchors Kate Beirness and Darren Dutchyshen will participate in several activities in the community including tackling the ‘Large Marge’ burger at Big Chief Drive-In.
Big Chief owner Brian Hoffman describes the dish as a dinner plate sized burger that is bold and out of control, featuring one pound of beef, topped with cheese, bacon, a handful of onion rings, and fresh tomatoes and lettuce.
“It’s an absolute honour to be chosen as one of the sites to represent our town as a stop on the Kraft Celebration Tour,” said Hoffman, who will serve up a famous ‘Large Marge’ burger to Beirness and Dutchyshen. “Saying we’re excited really doesn’t do it justice. We do what we do and we try to do it very well, and it’s a great honour to be recognized for it.”
Big Chief, which has operated at the same location on Dufferin Avenue in Wallaceburg since 1957, and daily uses a number of Kraft products alongside local produce, is challenging Beirness and Dutchyshen to finish the ‘Large Marge,’ although Beirness admits her chances are slim.
“No shot, I talked a lot of trash thinking I could do it until we looked into it and realized how big the burger was,” said Beirness, “I was really not lying when I said I’ve never made it through a quarter pounder.”
Pressure will be on Beirness as Big Chief owner Brian Hoffman has offered up $500, on top of the $25,000 awarded by Kraft, for the revitalization of Wallaceburg’s outdoor lacrosse facility if Beirness can finish the mammoth burger.
“We were wondering all along how we could show our support,” stated Hoffman. “When customers on our Facebook page told us that Darren and Kate mentioned ‘The Marge’ on SportsCentre, I said on Twitter that if Kate could finish a ‘Marge’ I’d donate $500. A couple days later I got called on it. I’ll bring my cheque book; I hope she brings her appetite.”
“The pressure is on now, I’m going to really try hard, but there must be a clause that we can work out, maybe Dutchy can eat my onion rings,” joked Beirness.
Wallaceburg is filled with rich traditions, beautiful natural landscapes and inviting people, which will be highlighted as the TSN anchors tour Wallaceburg during the Kraft Celebration Tour festivities.
The Kraft Celebration Tour visits Wallaceburg August 20, and will take place in Crothers Conservation Area from 4pm until 7pm.
