maple-syrupThe mild weather has dealt a blow to maple syrup producers in the area.

Don Giffin of Giffin’s Maple Syrup Products in Shrewsbury says record-breaking temperatures have completely stopped the flow of sap in his maple trees.

“When you don’t have any frost or snow or ice or anything like that, there’s no flow of sap, and your production stops,” says Giffin. “I haven’t made any syrup at all yet. It’s just one of those years where it’s a real problem.”

Giffin says he still has plenty of syrup left over from last season, but says for next year he’ll likely have to get some product shipped in to meet demand.
