The Municipality is working to better define what constitutes an animal rescue group.

Officials are hoping to amend the Responsible Animal Ownership Bylaw when it comes to selling cats and dogs in retail stores.

Last April, Chatham-Kent banned the sale of non-rescue animals in pet stores as a way to crack down on irresponsible breeders and puppy mills, but left out specific terms to clarify what being a rescue group entails

Under the proposed changes, a rescue group would be defined as a non-for-profit or charitable organization that is registered with the municipality and has a mandates to focus on rescuing and rehoming pets for animal welfare purposes.
