Fire officials are wishing area residents an enjoyable but safe long weekend.

Chatham-Kent Fire and Emergency Services Public Educator Whitney Burk says if you’re planning on setting off your own fireworks, you need to be very careful.

“Appoint a responsible adult, somebody over the age of 18. Make sure that person carefully reads the instructions that are on the fireworks. Keep a hose or pail of water close by whenever discharging fireworks and keep all fireworks displays away from combustible materials, such as your home, trees, or long grass,” says Burk.

There is a limited time for setting off a fireworks display this weekend – fireworks can be set off three days before and three days after Victoria Day, and only until 11pm each night.

Burk says, “You are able to set off fireworks on your own private property, but it’s strictly prohibited for them to be set off on public property, like parks, streets, or anywhere that would be considered municipal property.”
