Several families affected by the recent apartment fire in Wallaceburg are looking for alternative housing options.

Sources say some of the 17  affected families left the Days Inn this morning.

Chantal Perry, Program Manager at Chatham-Kent Employment and Social Services says the families were staying at the Days Inn the past few days, but were encouraged to find friends and family to stay with after today.

“If people could not return to their unit – and the expectation was that most people would be ale to return to their unit today – we were working with individual households to explore different housing arrangements for them,” says Perry.

Perry says affected families can contact Social Services if they require temporary housing.

“Each household was offered a number of individual options according to their own situation. As far as we were informed, the landlord and superintendent [of the apartment building] also was providing options for those that are unable to return immediately as well,” Perry explains.

In the meantime, the Moose Lodge and Southside Fitness in Wallaceburg are accepting food donations for the families. Donations can be dropped off at both locations.
