If it’s passed the legislation would make natural gas available to dozens of new communities across the province.

Premier Doug Ford made the announcement during the opening ceremonies at the International Plowing Match and Rural Expo on Tuesday.

“This new program, led by the private sector, would provide natural gas to as many as 78 communities, 33,000 new households across all of rural and northern Ontario,” Ford says.

The government acknowledges that the plan will be paid for by existing natural gas customers, but with a cap of $1.00 per month per customer, effective October. 1

The leader of the official opposition, Andrea Horvath says the plan in vague and the leader of Ontario’s Green Party Mike Schreiner says the government should now turn its attention to increased broadband service for rural Ontario.
