The Chatham-Kent PUC is set to begin its roll out of smart meters for water users.

With the average age of a water meter outside the city of Chatham sitting at 15 years or more, it was decided those users will be the first to get new water meters.

Installation of the almost $18,000 units is expected to start next March, with the replacement of meters in Chatham to follow.

All told there are more than $36,000 meters across Chatham-Kent and each is read, by hand, every three months.

The new system will allow for remote reading from a vehicle on the roadway allowing for more accurate billing, and lower administrative costs.

The first phase of the project will cost a hair over $2-million.
