Local event organizers are off the hook when it comes to the newly imposed Special Event Fee.

Approved during the 2018 budget deliberations, the municipality decided to charge a $100 fee to anyone holding an event on municipal property.

Councillor Karen Herman is glad the fee has been scrapped.

“The majority of  festivals and events that go on in our community are done by volunteers, and we depend on them,” the South Kent representative says. “It’s an economic development driver, the tourism dollars that come back in our community, that is what we do as Chatham-Kent residents, we give back.”

According to administration, the fees would have brought in about $23,000 per year to the municipality.
