A Wallaceburg Councillor wants a modern approach to flood prevention.

The Sydenham River overflowing its banks, February 21, 2018.

Councillor Jeff Wesley and Chatham-Kent Council are asking the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority to update the operation criteria for the W. Darcy McKeough Floodway Dam.

“Even with the criteria that’s being used today, there’s still flooding and damage occurring,” Wesley explains. “So what I want the SCRCA to do is reevaluate the operating criteria so we can operate it better, we can update the information, we can update the data, and hopefully we can operate it so there isn’t a single home in Wallaceburg and a single piece of property that gets damaged.”

Wesley says the current operating criteria hasn’t been updated since the 1990s, and a lot has changed since then.

Wesley says the municipality is open to working with the SCRCA on a review of the dam in 2019.
