A local highway safety advocate is cautiously optimistic about plans to expand a section of the 401 in Chatham-Kent.

The MTO is looking for contractors to widen an 11 kilometre stretch between Tilbury and Merlin Road, as well as add the long-awaited concrete median barrier.

Alysson Storey, the woman behind the Build the Barrier movement, says it’s a good first step.

“We would feel a little more comfortable if there was a timeline attached. The timeline we’ve been given is a vague of of basically, 2020, 2021, and it keeps getting pushed back.”

Storey says the project to extend concrete barriers between London and Tilbury will take years, but she’d like to see it started sooner than later.
