Several dozen students from Grades 9, 10 and 11 received Tartan Awards of Academic Excellence for the 2017-18 school year at an hour-long ceremony last night at Wallaceburg District Secondary School.
Corbin Jacobs was among the winners. The 17-year-old from Walpole Island won both the Walpole Island Most Dedicated Student Award as well as the First Nations Student Merit Award.
“I feel fantastic,” said Jacobs, who hopes to attend either Western or Fanshawe College in London next year to study Filmmaking and Media.
“It was a great experience.”
Sara Park was also a multiple winner.
“I got highest standing in Grade 11 English and Leadership,” said the 17-year old. “And, also highest average overall for grade 11,” she added. “I feel great.”
Park plans on attending Queen’s University in Kingston next year to begin the process of becoming a teacher.
The first-year principal at WDSS is impressed with the quality of students receiving the awards.
Melissa Mallette says honours went to students who had an average of 80 per cent or higher in eight courses.
An estimated 300 student, parents and staff members attended the event.
