Accused Serial Forger Arrested In Chatham-Kent

A Quebec man accused of repeatedly forging documents and false IDs is facing numerous fraud charges after being arrested in Chatham-Kent.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service said a man went to a bank on King Street in Chatham on Tuesday at around 1:15 p.m., after making a pre-arranged appointment with the staff. The man provided a fake name and driver’s license, prompting a call to police, however, he left the bank before officers arrived.

Police issued an alert to other financial institutions about the incident and it wasn’t long before police were called to another bank, this time in Wallaceburg.

Police said the same man scheduled an appointment at the Wallaceburg bank at around 2:45 p.m., where he provided another fake name and driver’s license.

Officers attended the bank and arrested a 54-year-old Quebec man, who police learned was on a probation order after being previously charged with three counts of possessing or selling ID documents, four counts of uttering forged documents, possessing another person’s identity, public mischief and failing to attend court. The man also has outstanding warrants in other provinces.

The man’s probation order stipulated that he was not allowed to possess any identification or document that bears another person’s name, police said.

The Quebec man is now additionally charged with two counts of possessing a forged document, four counts of failing to comply with a probation order, three counts of failing to comply with a release order, and one count of fraud under $5,000. He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.
