A local councillor wants to see more lighting in downtown Wallaceburg in an effort to deter crime.
Wallaceburg Councillor Aaron Hall plans to introduce a motion that would have staff look at the feasibility of installing additional lighting over downtown sidewalks. If the motion moves forward, administration would be instructed to complete a report and return to council with estimated costs and timing of implementation.
According to Hall’s motion, a Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design audit commissioned by the Chatham-Kent Police Service highlighted a need for increased lighting in several areas of the municipality. The lighting would also complement recently installed CCTV surveillance cameras in the downtown core.
CK administration has expressed concern that by introducing this level of service in Wallaceburg, it is possible that other communities such as Chatham, Thamesville and Dresden, will also want similar amenities. This would lead to additional pressure on municipal asset management and capital dollars.
A previously approved project to replace street lights in downtown Wallaceburg has also been experiencing delays due to budget constraints.
Hall will present his motion to council during Monday night’s meeting.
