Construction is set to begin on a new affordable housing building in the New Year.

Council approved a zoning change to allow for a 14-unit apartment building on Dolsen Road in Chatham.

While municipal officials agree the proposed building is much needed in Chatham-Kent, residents in the area are opposed, citing property value, privacy, and noise concerns.

Developer Tim Zavitz says he’s willing to work with the residents and wants to be a good neighbour.

Shelley Wilkins, Director of Housing Services, says 850 people are on a wait-list for an affordable one bedroom apartment.
