Crews from the Ministry of Environment, Conservation, and Parks have been spending some time in Wheatley this week, but Chatham-Kent officials say there’s no cause for alarm.
Provincial staff have been disconnecting and removing a pair of ambient air H2S monitors that have been on site since last year.
The monitors were supplied by the province following the August 2021 explosion to measure hydrogen sulphide levels on the perimeter of the evacuation zone.
However, monitoring will continue around the site of the blast. The municipality has hired a contractor to replace the units at the edges of the current evacuation zone, and Chatham-Kent Fire and Emergency Services has also placed identical monitors on a mobile unit which can be deployed in the event of any calls about gas odours.
Officials remind residents if they smell gas at any time, call 911 immediately.
