All-Clear After Weekend Gas Release in Wheatley

Emergency crews were on guard in Wheatley over the weekend after a low level of combustible gas was released on Friday.

In a statement, municipal officials say the systems, procedures, and venting stack worked according to plan, and the gas was effectively flared off and there was no danger to the public.

A second event occurred later in the evening and steps were taken to ensure ongoing safety including igniting the flare stack to control the gas and staffing up the site for overnight observation.

By 9 o’clock the following morning, gas levels had reduced and the stack was extinguished, followed by a return to regular monitoring by the on-site team.

“We are pleased that the mitigation equipment/procedures on-site are working exactly as planned and are confident that the current evacuation zone remains secure,” Director of Public Works Ryan Brown said.
