Alleged Drunk Driver Arrested In Chatham

A Chatham man is facing impaired driving charges after police stopped a vehicle for blowing past a stop sign.

The Ontario Provincial Police said an officer stopped a passenger vehicle on Grand Avenue East near Woodland Avenue in Chatham at around 1 a.m. on Friday, for poor driving behaviour including failing to stop at a stop sign.

While speaking to the driver, authorities said the driver showed signs of impairment. It was also learned that the driver’s licence had been suspended.

The driver was arrested and taken to police headquarters for further tests, but he refused to provide a breath sample.

As a result, a 50-year-old Chatham man is now charged with impaired driving, failing to comply with a demand, disobeying a stop sign, having a blood alcohol level over zero as a novice driver, and two counts of driving while under suspension.

The accused was also issued a 90 driver’s licence suspension and his vehicle will be impounded for seven days.
