The use of video surveillance technology helped US border patrol agents thwart an alleged human smuggling attempt on the St. Clair River near Walpole Island.
Around 3am on August 2nd, US Customs and Border Protection dispatch monitoring a remote surveillance system spotted a vessel heading towards Algonac on a historically known smuggling route and agents were dispatched immediately.
Three people were taken into custody, all of whom admitted to having crossed the border from Canada in a boat.
One of the subjects is a 53-year-old male Dominican national, along with two Mexican women in their mid-20s.
“Intercepting this was made possible by technology and the teamwork of our agents and support personal,” Chief Patrol Agent Robert Danley said. “I am proud of the vigilance and dedication to duty displayed by the men and women of Detroit Sector.”
The three subjects were transported to the Border Patrol station for processing.
