A local man is facing a list of charges following an aborted attempt to steal from a clothing store in Chatham.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service said officers were called to Winners on St. Clair Street shortly before noon on Sunday to investigate suspicious activity.

Authorities learned that a man had exited the store, but that left a bag behind containing suspected stolen property.

Officers identified a suspect through video surveillance and arrested him a short distance away. The suspect was also wanted on an outstanding warrant for failing to attend court in connection to several theft investigations.

A 53-year-old Chatham-Kent man is now charged with four counts of theft, four counts of possessing stolen property, failing to comply with an appearance notice, failing to comply with a release order and failing to attend court. He was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
