Almost Time to Change Your Clocks

This weekend marks the end of Daylight Saving Time for another year.

Clocks fall back one hour early at 2 o’clock Sunday morning with sunrise set for 7:10am and sunset at 5:14pm.

Contrary to popular belief the origins of the biannual time change, brought into effect in Ontario in 1918, lay more with energy consumption during war time than giving farmers more daylight to harvest their fields.

Last November, the Ontario government tabled legislation to end the time change, making Daylight Saving Time permanent and scrapping Eastern Standard Time altogether. However, it will require similar changes in Quebec and New York in order to take effect.

Fire officials say the time change also serves as a good reminder to change the batteries in smoke and CO detectors in your home.
