Andrew Scheer is stepping down as leader of the federal Conservative Party.

Scheer made the official announcement in the House of Commons early Thursday afternoon after speaking to members of the Conservative caucus this morning

On top of criticism for poor election results, Scheer is under fire after recent allegations of using party money to pay for the private education of his children.

Scheer will remain in the role until a new leader is chosen, which could be until the party convention in April.
