A typically uncomfortable conversation between a parent and a child turned violent in Chatham when a man tried to confront his stepson about smoking pot.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service said the man attempted to speak with his stepson and his friend about cannabis use Wednesday evening. When the man attempted to take away the stepson’s drug paraphernalia, the friend tried to run away with one of the items, resulting in a physical altercation.

The man then confronted his partner, which led to an argument about the stepson. The incident escalated when the man grabbed the woman, causing her to fall and hit her head. She received medical attention from EMS.

Police were called shortly before 9 p.m. and the man was arrested.

A 46-year-old Chatham man is now charged with two counts of assault. He was taken to police headquarters and held pending a bail hearing.
