Arson Not Suspected Following Fatal Tent Fire

Police have released more information following a tent fire that claimed the life of a Chatham woman over the weekend.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service said emergency crews were called to the end of King Street East near Wellington Street East in Chatham at around 8:40 p.m. on Saturday after a fire started inside a tent.

Authorities have confirmed that a 66-year-old Chatham woman was pronounced dead at the scene. At the request of family members, police are not releasing the woman’s name at this time.

No other injuries have been reported.

Following an investigation that included the review of surveillance footage, police said there has been no evidence of arson, and foul play is not suspected. The results of a post-mortem autopsy also corroborate that the woman’s death was not the result of criminal activity, police added.

Police are coordinating with Chatham-Kent Fire and Rescue and the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office as the investigation continues.
