A local man has been arrested following a lengthy police standoff in downtown Chatham.
The Chatham-Kent Police Service said a warrant was issued for the arrest of a 33-year-old Chatham man on November 1, after he allegedly struck a 42-year-old woman with a baseball bat during an argument.
On Sunday, January 4, shortly before 10 a.m., officers attended a residence on King Street East to arrest the accused. However, he refused to exit the home, prompting officers to set up a perimeter are the residence.
Authorities conducted negotiations throughout the day until officers gained entry to the home at around 2 p.m. and took the suspect into custody without incident. No injuries were reported.
The 33-year-old has been charged with assault and failing to comply with a release order. He was held in custody for a bail hearing.
