Police are urging everyone to take precautions to protect themselves when out holiday shopping.
The Ontario Provincial Police said there are a few easy steps to help ensure you do not become the victim of theft during a shopping trip, such as keeping wallets and purses safely secured, not carrying large amounts of currency, and protecting your PIN number at sale terminals.
“Following these easy shopping tips will go a long way towards making your holiday season safe and fun for everyone on your list,” police said in a news release.
As well, shoppers should get their cash from recognized bank machines rather than ATMs, to avoid thieves who use card-skimming devices.
Carrying around a large number of gifts can also make you a target. Authorities said to store gifts in your car’s trunk, or in the case of SUVs and pick-up trucks, place them on the floor and cover them with a blanket.
Be sure to also lock your vehicle, roll up your windows, and park in a well-lit area to deter theft.
