Back To School, But For How Long?

It’s back to business at area high schools after a one-day strike by members of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation.

The rotating job action shut down high schools and saw teachers walk the picket lines at 10 school boards across the province, including the Lambton Kent and Thames Valley District boards.

Talks between the union and Ministry of Education ended earlier this week with a mediator saying the two sides were too far apart to continue.

No new talks are scheduled until the new year.

Meantime, the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association has notified the St Clair Catholic District School Board that it will be in a legal strike position as of this Saturday.

However, at this point there has been no word on any job action.

The OECTA represents all elementary, secondary, and occasional teachers in the English Catholic board.

Director of Education Deb Crawford issued a letter to parents yesterday, saying that while the board remains hopeful that a negotiated settlement can be reached at the bargaining table, full strike action would compromise student supervision and safety, and the board would have no choice but to close all of its schools.
