Fire officials are reminding local residents to maintain their appliances following a residential fire in Chatham.

Chatham-Kent Fire and Rescue said fire crews were called to the home at 72 Forest Street at around 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday to find smoke coming from the basement. The fire was quickly extinguished, and ventilation was used to clear residual smoke from the home.

The home’s occupants were able to get out of the home safely before firefighters arrived. One person was assessed for smoke inhalation but was cleared by EMS at the scene. No injuries were reported.

Fire officials said the blaze originated in a faulty clothes dryer located in the basement. Damage to the home is estimated at around $5,000.

Residents are reminded to regularly inspect and maintain household appliances, especially dryers. Fire officials said everyone should also ensure they have working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in their homes
