Chatham-Kent council denied the request of the owners of a heritage home located outside of Mitchell’s Bay to remove the heritage designation from their home.

The owners of the home located on Bay Line said they want to remove the heritage designation because they are having a hard time finding affordable insurance due to the heritage designation.

Chatham-Kent’s heritage committee advised council to deny the request, noting that there are local insurance companies that will insure designated properties at reasonable rates.

The heritage committee said in a deputation that being designated should not place any additional requirements on a homeowner’s insurance.

Designated heritage homes get 25% off their municipal property taxes to help them maintain their homes.
