Job Seekers: Be Prepared!

A series of job fair boot camps wraps up with two sessions today, helping to prepare job seekers for a massive career fair scheduled for October 1.

Christin Barr of the Chatham-Kent Workforce Planning Board, left, and Lisa McAllister of the St. Clair College Employment Centre, helped run a job fair boot-camps session in Chatham on September 18 to help prepare people for the upcoming CK Works! Community Job Fair.

“We can assist those who want to attend, get prepared,” says  Lisa McAllister, who works for the St. Clair College Employment Centre. “Not just their resume but to understand the importance of research, the importance of looking the part, and to understand how to conduct themselves at the job fair so they do stand out.”

McAllister says the biggest mistake that job hunters make is taking a one-size-fits-all approach to looking for a job.

“It’s not just about just getting the resume, it’s understanding what these employers do so you can engage in a conversation with them and you’re able to then understand what skills to sell to the employers,” McAllister says.

There are two more boot camp sessions today, one at the Tilbury Municipal Service Centre from 1 until 3, and the second at the municipal centre in Blenheim from 5 til 7.

The CK Works! Community Job Fair runs from 2-7pm on October 1st at the John D Bradley Convention Centre, with over 40 employers registered.
