Be Prepared!

It’s Emergency Preparedness Week, and the Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit wants everyone to be ready for a disaster. emergency-kit

Public Health Registered Nurse Lorna Oakey says being prepared is important.

“In an emergency, Canadians need to be able to protect themselves and their families by making a plan and preparing a kit so you are able to sustain your family for 72 hours,” Oakey says. “It might take that long for emergency services to get back in place or for help to come to assist you.”

An emergency kit should include drinking water, a flashlight, non-perishable food, medications, and other necessities.

Oakey says Chatham-Kent residents are likely to encounter severe storms and spring flooding like we experienced last week, and the power outages and road closures associated with these weather events.
