Driving through a stop sign has ultimately led to drug and weapon charges for a man and woman from Chatham.
The Chatham-Kent Police Service said an officer on general patrol spotted a vehicle drive past the stop sign at the intersection of Landing Pass and Grand Avenue East in Chatham, at around 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Upon stopping the vehicle, the officer learned the driver did not have a valid driver’s license and was bound by several prohibition orders.
A search of the vehicle led to the seizure of suspected cocaine, fentanyl, methamphetamine, and oxycodone with an estimated street value of $8,000. A Tazer was also found in the vehicle.
As a result, a 52-year-old man and a 61-year-old woman, both from Chatham, have been charged with four counts of possession of a controlled substance with the purpose of trafficking. The man is additionally charged with failing to stop at a stop sign, driving while under suspension, unauthorized possession of a weapon, and four counts of possession of a weapon contrary to a prohibition.
With the woman was released with a February court date, the man was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
