A local physician returning from maternity leave has inspired Chatham-Kent’s hospital to create a new care space for new mothers.
The Chatham-Kent Health Alliance has opened a new Breastfeeding Room at its Chatham site to support patients, families, visitors, and staff who require a private, quiet space to breastfeed, pump, or care for their infants.
In celebration of World Breastfeeding Week, the room was opened on August 1 and will be accessible 24/7 by coordinating through the Women and Children’s front desk.
The new care space was inspired by a returning physician who, after her maternity leave, requested a suitable space for breastfeeding.
“Supporting people in their breastfeeding journey is part of creating a more welcoming and equitable healthcare environment,” said Jessica Johnston, the manager of the Women and Children’s Program at CKHA, in a news release. “Whether you’re a staff member returning to work or a parent visiting a loved one, we want you to feel supported.”
Funding for the project was provided by the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance Foundation.
World Breastfeeding Week takes place from August 1 to 7, raising awareness about the benefits of breastfeeding and the importance of creating supportive environments.
