A pair of alleged thieves from Chatham have been arrested after their getaway vehicle broke down at the scene of the crime.

The Ontario Provincial Police said officers were called to a farm on Trillium Drive in Southwest Middlesex on Friday at around 8:30 p.m. following a break-and-enter in progress at a shop on the property.

According to authorities, two thieves attempted to flee the scene, however, their motorcycle broke down and they fled on foot into a cornfield.

Officers called in the OPP Canine Unit and the Emergency Response Team, which assisted in locating two suspects.

A 44-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman, both from Chatham, are now charged with break-and-enter to commit an indictable offence, theft under $5,000, and possession of stolen property under $5,000.

The pair have since been released from custody with a September court date.
