Sarnia Police are warning residents around the region about the latest phone scam.
Authorities say two woman were caught up in the scam recently.
Someone claiming to be from Canada Border Services and in one case, accused a woman of money laundering and in another, said there was a package with the woman’s name on it that was subject to duty charges. The culprits then asked to be paid in bitcoin from a local convenience store.
In one case a 24-year-old woman sent $1,420 dollars and a 60-year-old victim was bilked out of $560. Neither of the victims were able to get their money back.
Bottom line, government agencies never deal in crypto currency or gift cards.
