Cashing in on the Film Industry in CK

Filmmaking and television production are big industries in the province, bringing in a large amount of money in economic activity. Chatham-Kent mayor Darrin Canniff wants Chatham-Kent to get a piece of that pie.

At tonight’s Chatham-Kent council meeting, Canniff will bring in a motion for the municipality to hire a dedicated staff member for no less than 12 months to foster the filming industry in the municipality.

“Studies have found that up to 20% of a production’s total budget is typically spent on the filming location,” Canniff’s motion reads. “With most productions costing between $800,000 and $1-million, filming in Chatham-Kent could provide significant benefits.”

Canniff also wants administration to explore and report back to council on the potential for economic spin-off and benefits from filming productions in Chatham-Kent.
