The local English catholic school board has sold off its final surplus property in the region.

Trustees with the St. Clair Catholic District School Board have approved the $1.6 million sale of the former Georges P. Vanier Catholic School to Conseil scolaire Viamonde, a French board that has facilities across southern and central Ontario, including Windsor, London, and Sarnia.

The school on Cecile Avenue closed in 2019 as part of the St. Clair board’s restructuring that saw elementary schools in Chatham consolidated into two larger facilities, St. Angela Merici, which opened in 2020 and St. Teresa of Calcutta, which welcomed its first students in 2024.

Most recently, the Georges P. Vanier building was used by the Chatham-Kent Police Service for community safety and tactical training exercises.
