Celebrating Diversity in CK

Chatham-Kent is celebrating its diversity with the recognition of several groups who’ve recently welcomed refugees into the community. welcoming-community

Last night’s Council meeting highlighted the importance of diversity in Chatham-Kent, from sharing culture to growing and improving our economy.

Tracy Callaghan, Co-Chair of the Chatham-Kent Local Immigration Partnership says of the nearly 300 people who used the Adult Language and Learning Centre last year, almost half were newcomers.

“It’s just so heart-warming to see all of these cultures here and being accepted and welcomed into our community,” Callaghan says. “There’s a lot of work we have to do to dispel some of the myths because they’re here to learn and to grow and to be part of our community.”

Along with French and English, 35 different languages are spoken in Chatham-Kent.
