Charges Laid Against Pipe-Wielding Suspect

Police were forced to Taser an aggressive man after he allegedly threatened officers with a lead pipe in Chatham.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service said officers were called at around 4:40 p.m. on Wednesday, after a man was seen whipping a large chain at a pylon on Grand Avenue West in Chatham. When security guards in the area approached the man, he aggressively charged at them while holding a large steel pipe.

Police located the man on Emma Street, however, he was aggressive toward officers while holding the pipe in a threatening manner. After attempting to negotiate with the man, officers used a conducted energy weapon to disarm him and take him into custody.

A 48-year-old Chatham-Kent man is now charged with assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon dangerous for the public peace. He was taken to police headquarters and held for a bail hearing.
