Charges Laid Following Attempted Vehicle Thefts

The discovery of two vehicles in a ditch on Longwoods Road has landed a Windsor man with a slew of charges.

Investigators believe a man lost control of his own vehicle, slid off the road and came to rest in a field.

Police say the man went to a nearby restaurant under the guise of calling a relative to pick him up, but instead allegedly tried to steal a pair of vehicles from another business. When he discovered the gates of the business were locked, police say the suspect tried to drive through a ditch but got stuck in the mud.

The man is then said to have broken into a building on the property to get keys to another vehicle, but was unable to find any.

Video surveillance helped identify the accused, who was later found in Chatham.

The 22-year-old is facing several charges, including break and enter, two counts of theft of a motor vehicle, and two counts of possession of stolen property.

The man was taken to police headquarters, released with conditions, and will have to appear in court May 27.
