Charges Laid Following CK Freedom Rally

A Wallaceburg woman who organized last weekend’s freedom rally in Tecumseh Park is now facing charges.

Just over 100 people turned out for the ‘Hugs Over Masks’ protest in downtown Chatham this past Saturday, voicing their opposition to what they consider unfair COVID restrictions.

Chatham-Kent Police and municipal bylaw enforcement officers kept tabs on the event, and say the number of attendees exceeded the limits for an outdoor gathering.

The 32-year-old organizer has been issued a Provincial Offences Act summons.

According to the Reopening Ontario Act, a conviction comes with a fine of not less than $10,000 and not more than $100,000, and could include a term of imprisonment of not more than one year.

“During these difficult and challenging times those jeopardizing public safety and contradicting the law, will be held accountable to the courts,” Police Chief Gary Conn says. “The law is clear and requires responsible action.”

The woman will appear in court January 6th.
