A local artist will be adding a splash of colour and creativity to downtown Chatham.

The Historic Downtown Chatham BIA issued a call for artists last July to create a new mural for the side of the Garden Event Centre, formerly River Rock nightclub, at the corner of King Street West and Fourth Street.

Chatham artist Ruth Ann Pearce has been selected as the winning artist, and says her piece aims to capture the diverse aspects of the community, from its rich history to vibrant sports culture and thriving agriculture.

“Living in Chatham-Kent, Ontario means embracing a life enriched by community, nature, and history,” Pearce said in a written statement. “It’s a place where family ties are cherished, neighbours look out for one another, and a friendly spirit prevails.”

The mural, which will be installed on the east-facing wall of the building on three panels, each measuring 12’ wide by 16’ high, serving as a visual landmark to promote community pride and engagement.

Funding for the project has been provided through the Hydro One Ward Councillor Grant program, courtesy of Ward 6 councillors Michael Bondy, Brock McGregor, Marjorie Crew, Conor Allin, and Mayor Darrin Canniff.

An official unveiling will be held Thursday, July 10.
