A piece of local history is getting some provincial recognition.
Officials with the Chatham-Kent Black Historical Society and Black Mecca Museum recently paid a visit to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in Toronto to set up a temporary exhibit focusing on the Chatham Coloured All Stars and the team’s historic 1934 provincial championship.
The exhibit features a replica jersey, a Chatham Sports Hall of Fame Induction Plaque, a Louisville Slugger baseball bat presented to Archie Sterling by the team, and the catcher’s mitt worn by third baseman of the 1934 championship All-Stars, Kingsley Terrell.
The pieces are on display as part of the Community Exhibits Program, which gives museums, cultural groups, archives, and community organizations across Ontario an opportunity to share their stories, treasures, and perspectives in the heart of Queen’s Park. This year’s focus is Sports in Ontario, with exhibits remaining on display until December.
