Chatham Coloured All-Stars Strike Out Again With Baseball Hall of Fame

Following six unsuccessful years on the ballot, the 1934 Chatham Coloured All-Stars still have a few more chances to make it into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame.

Earlier this week, the Hall of Fame released the names of its inductees for 2023, but the All-Stars didn’t make the cut once again after first being nominated in 2017.

The 1934 Chatham Coloured All-Stars are the first all-black team to win a provincial championship in Ontario.

While disappointment has been expressed over the perceived snub into the nation’s Baseball Hall of Fame, the trailblazing team remains on the ballot and will be eligible for induction until 2026.

“While the 1934 Chatham Coloured All-Stars were not selected for induction this year, it is important to note that they first appeared on the ballot in 2017, and thus still have three years in which to gain election by the independent selection committee,” the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame said in an email to CKXS News.

The Baseball Hall of Fame selection committee is made up of 24 members comprised of historians, past inductees, media and baseball executives. To be inducted into the hall of fame, a candidate must receive votes from 75 per cent of the committee members.

The All-Stars have previously been inducted into the Ontario Baseball Hall of Fame and, more recently, Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame.
