Chatham-Kent Prepares for Solar Eclipse

Southwestern Ontario residents and visitors will be in for a celestial treat today with a rare total solar eclipse making its way along the Lake Erie shoreline.

The eclipse begins at 1:59pm in Chatham-Kent with light levels and colours starting to change at 2:59. The deepest point of the eclipse when the sun is most hidden is expected at 3:15. Light levels and temperatures will to rise again by 3:39 and the eclipse will be over by 4:28.

Emergency crews will be on alert today with an influx of tourists expected. Officials say traffic could be very heavy before, during, and after the event in areas including Erieau and Rondeau Bay.

Provincial Police are offering a few road safety tips as well. Authorities say drivers traveling to attend a solar eclipse event should be prepared for delays, ensure their vehicle full headlines are on, do not wear eclipse glasses while driving, and never pull over or stop on the road or shoulder to view the eclipse.

Officials with Rondeau Provincial Park say the park is already sold out for day use passes, and only vehicles with a campsite, pavilion, or day use reservation will be allowed to enter the park. Cottager access is unaffected.
