A Chatham elementary school was placed under hold-and-secure status during an incident on Tuesday, which also prompted a call to police.

Chatham-Kent Police were called to King George VI Public School shortly before noon on Tuesday after an argument between two students turned physical.

In a letter to parents and caregivers, school officials said they worked with the Chatham-Kent Police Service to de-escalate the situation.

“In the process, there is a chance that students may have witnessed something unsettling or out of the norm,” school officials told parents, offering counselling services to students in need. “The safety and well-being of our students, staff and families is our highest priority.”

A 13-year-old student was arrested and has since been charged with assault. The boy was released to his parents with conditions and a date in court next month.
