A 30-year-old Chatham woman is facing charges after failing to stop for a school bus.

Chatham-Kent Police say early Wednesday morning, a car passed a school bus on Thames Street in Chatham. The bus has its red lights flashing and stop arm activated. The bus driver pressed on the horn to get the vehicle to stop, but the woman continued to pass, making no attempt to stop or slow down.

Officers were able to track down the woman through footage obtained by the camera on the bus.

Police are reminding residents that there is a $400-$2000 fine for not stopping for a school bus when its lights are flashing, and you could get 6 demerit points for a first offence.

A second offence within five years could result in a fine of $1000-$4000 and 6 demerit points. Police say multiple offences could also result in jail time for up to 6 months.

School bus drivers and witnesses can report vehicles that have illegal passed a school bus.
