Chatham-Kent officials and sports enthusiasts are celebrating the opening of a new indoor recreational facility in Chatham.
A grand opening was held on Wednesday for the CK Flex Plex, a new 37,000-square-foot complex, located at the former Navistar property on Merritt Avenue.
Developer Philip Ong teamed up with the Tatro Group to construct the new facility, which will provide an indoor space for residents to play their favourite sporting activities, such as soccer, volleyball, badminton, pickleball and table tennis all year-round.
Ong said his goal was to improve the community he lives in.
“The space is beautiful. I’m very proud of what we built here, and I’m looking forward to welcoming Chatham to enjoy the space,” he said.
If the facility does well, Ong said there are long-term plans for expanding the facility and adding additional outdoor amenities as well.
CK Mayor Darrin Canniff said the demand for indoor recreation is growing in the community
“I am so proud that Phillip, the owner, has stepped up here and recognized the need in the market,” said Canniff. “He has spent a lot of money putting this in place and [I’m] looking forward to our community engaging with this.”
The CK Flex Plex has already begun hosting leagues and tournaments, and an open house will be held on Saturday. Those aged 4-16 are invited to attend from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m., and those 17 and older are welcome from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.
