Chatham-Kent Police Service Chief Gary Conn says the Ontario Association Of Chiefs of Police is reviewing new rules surrounding the practices known as “Carding” and “Street Checks”.
In an email from the police service Conn addressed the legislation change.
“Street checks are a public safety tool. They assist police in preventing and solving crimes and in gaining better understanding of criminal activities. In respect to the new regulations, I believe there is still a fair bit of unknown variables which have to be answered at this point, for example who will provide and the standard of the training associated to this regulation,” states Conn. “I know we are currently reviewing the new regulations, along with the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police, and I believe once this has been completed we will be better educated to make a more informed decision and comment surrounding the new regulation.”
The new rules come into effect Jan. 1st 2017.
