Walpole Island residents are using the Christmas season to spread some joy during these tough days. Penny Williams is a Community Health Specialist.

“Since COVID-19 started, we got this idea from two community members to put up Christmas lights, or lights in the shape of hearts, to encourage people in the community to be safe. Now we have about 50 hearts up in the community and 38 Christmas lights up,” explains Williams.

She says for most people the hearts really mean something, maybe for a family member or the fight against COVID-19 in general.

“When you go driving around at night after 9pm, they just cheer you up. Some of these lights mean something. I asked some of the community members and they said the lights mean health and safety. We just want everyone to be happy and safe,” said Williams.

Although she wishes local residents could drive around and see the lights, the bridge going over to Walpole Island remains closed.
