Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland is now Canada’s first female Minister of Finance.
Freeland was officially sworn in to the new position on Tuesday afternoon.
Bill Morneau resigned from his cabinet post and as an MP late Tuesday, leaving a gaping hole in the federal government in the midst of the economic crisis caused by COVID-19.
Freeland, who is also Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and a former foreign affairs minister, will remain in her role as Deputy Prime Minister. She will reportedly hand down the Intergovernmental Affairs title to Dominic LeBlanc.
Former finance minister Morneau and Prime Minister Trudeau are under investigation by the Ethics Commissioner in relation to a conflict of interest with the WE Charity and a $900 million dollar student grant program.
